4D Pregnancy Scan

4D pregnancy scan shows 3 dimensional moving image of the baby inside the womb with the time being the fourth dimension. 3D and 4D scans are considered as safe as 2D scans, because the images are made up of sections of two-dimensional images converted into a picture
Who is it for?

The scan will be offered from 26 to 30 weeks of pregnancy. 4D pregnancy scan is a lovely way of bonding with your baby. You can bring family members with you.

When should it be done?

The best time to have a 3D or 4D scan is between 26 weeks and 30 weeks of pregnancy.

Before 26 weeks the baby has very little fat under the skin, so the bones of baby’s face will show through. After 30 weeks, the baby's head may go deep down in the pelvis, so you may not be able to see baby’s face.

If the placenta is at the front of your womb (uterus), known as anterior placenta, you'll get the best images of your baby if you wait until 28 weeks.

What does it involve?

4D pregnancy scan is an abdominal scan. A full bladder is not necessary for this scan. The picture quality varies depending on the amount of liquor around the baby, location of placenta and the way baby is lying. This scan provides excellent images of your baby and reassures that baby is doing well. We do not measure the baby or look for any abnormalities during this scan. However if any gross abnormality is detected during your scan, you will be given all the appropriate information, support and you will be referred to an appropriate specialist.
